FREEPORT
Freeport, an industrial centre, is located on the island of Grand Bahama, the northernmost island of the archipelago. Grand Bahama, just 70 miles from Palm Beach, Florida, is a regular stop on the short cruise circuit from South Florida. But the fourth largest island in the 700 Bahamas, it also owes its popularity to its white sand beaches and water sports, from snorkeling to deep sea fishing. in the 1950s, the island realized its potential for tourism-related revenue when Wallace Groves, an American financier from Virginia, proposed to build a city that would be attractive to visitors and sufficiently supported by industry. Since then, Freeport has grown up with hotels, restaurants, casinos and ecotourism attractions such as Lucayan National Park. Port Lucaya and its market have evolved into the island's tourist center, partly through design and partly due to hurricane damage elsewhere in the area. Freeport has everything from shops and beaches to restaurants and a casino - not to mention a handful of major golf courses.
